Talking Drums

29/01/15

One of our developers recently returned from visiting his family in Ghana and brought with him a very interesting gift for the office – a traditional djembe or Ghanaian talking drum.

The djembe is a rope-tuned skin and hardwood goblet drum, originating with the Mali Empire and used throughout Western Africa since around 1200AD. According to the Bambara people of Mali, the name of the djembe comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé", meaning "everyone gather together in peace".

As well as being played as part of a percussion assemble, the djembe has traditionally been used as a signalling drum. Its loud clear tones and versatility make it ideal for communicating complex messages across long distances. In fact, the Malinké people say that a skilled drummer is one who "can make the djembe talk".

Communication is also important to our work here at Epitomy. Our solutions are designed to empower companies to extract value from their product data by moving up the Knowledge Pyramid, providing staff and customers with product knowledge and wisdom.

A key component of this approach is improving communication along the supply chain – between manufacturers and their dealer network, between dealers and customers and between customers and the OEM. Just as the djembe helped the people of Western Africa communicate with each other over 800 years ago, our solutions help todays manufacturers communicate with their customers and distribution partners.
